Breaking the Cycle of Failure and Survival

The Sine Curve of Life — Photo by Arunima

You started an exercise regime this month.

You picked the best exercises, prepared your diet chart, did habit stacking, and you’re finally on track.

This goes on for a month or two.

Everyone’s noticed the few pounds you lost, and how you look radiant.

But then….

Can you keep up?

Weeks go by, and somehow you’re back to where you started.

Tummy rolls, hunched back, chugging beer and burger on Fridays.

Those same friends notice the rolls again, make fun of you, and you’re back to square one.

We’ve all been through this sine curve in life, not just with dieting and exercising.

Could be business, learning, job performance, relationships — almost everything.

Up, then down the drain. Up again, down again.

It sucks.

Why do our lives work like a damned sine wave?

When you are looking down the barrel of failure, your work going down the drain, you will do whatever it takes to climb up, fight, and survive.

For a business that’s starting, it means great customer service where the founder himself helps.

For someone starting weight loss, it is eating right, gyming and keeping up.

For someone pursuing a date, it is putting efforts into date night.

You’re desperate to make it.

To not drown, to swim up for air.

But once you reach the point of survival, you get complacent.

You think you can go back to your old ways because it’s the NEW NORMAL.

You calm down, lose motivation, become comfortable.

Once you’re breathing above water, you stop trying to keep your head up. And that means…

You start drowning again.

This means, once you lose enough weight, you stop keeping up and get fat again.

Businesses that reach a certain MRR, their customer service or feature development speed go to shit.

Once a couple stops dating, and gets into a comfortable relationship, all hell breaks lose because they stop putting explicit efforts.

But when you’re drowning again, going down the barrel of failure again…you go “Oops, I’m failing again

And then you use all your might to survive.

That’s why, so many of us follow this curve of failure, survival, failure, survival.

Worst thing is many of us never drink the elixir of success, cause we’re stuck in this wave.

We never go from survival to success.

But if you examine your failure and survival curve you’ll understand the actions that brought you from failure to survival..

They would take you from survival to success.

That means,

Businesses should keep doing unscalable things, to go from survival to success.Their acumen lies in turning unscalable into scalable.

If you want to lose, should always eat right. Not because you want to lose weight, but because you want to keep healthy.

If you want to have a healthy relationship, pursue each other with excitement, the same way you did while dating.

The craziest thing?

- We don’t know this, but we know exactly what we need to succeed.

If you have reached the survival point, you know your way to success. You already did it once, you only have to keep at it again.

The same zeal, accumen, motivation, or whatever you did in the way from failure.

- You should do sustainable shit to go from failure to survival.

Something that you’re not doing only to survive, but you can keep up forever.

Otherwise, you’ll go right back down. This is why crash diets don’t work. If you do activities that are not sustainable for long time, you’re just gonna be stuck in the failure-survival loop and never ride the survival-to-success wave.

So, let’s break the cycle.

Let’s do sustainable shit, and

Let’s ride our waves to success.
